How to Make Cocopeat for Growing Media 



GROW RICH - Cocopeat or can be called coco coir or coco fiber is an alternative growing medium that can be used for the cultivation of various types of plants, especially hydroponics. The main ingredient of this planting medium is made from coconut husks or shells that are processed or mashed, so that they become grains such as sawdust.

Cocopeat is very good to be used as a planting medium because it is balanced in retaining moisture, meaning that the plants do not wilt easily because the water stored in cocopeat is long enough.

In addition, cocopeat can also neutralize pH levels and store nutrients provided by plant owners. Therefore, this planting medium is very good for those of you who collect plants at home.

Generally cocopeat can be obtained or purchased at almost every plant store, but you can actually make it yourself because it’s easy, and it can be more economical at the same time.

Items that need to be prepared,

  • Coconut fiber,
  • Water,
  • Nife,
  • Blender,
  • Filter,
  • Mol rice washing water
  • And rabbit urine
  1. Wet the coconut coir After getting the coconut coir, the first thing that needs to be done is watering the coconut coir. Use coconut husk as needed. Moisten the coconut husk so that it is not too hard when cutting. Once moistened, the coconut husk is ready to be cut into small pieces.
  2. Dry the coconut coir pieces After cutting into small pieces, dry the coconut coir pieces to make it easier to grind for several hours. After drying and drying, the coconut husk can be mashed.
  3. Puree To smooth the coconut coir, you can manually pound it or use a blender until smooth.
  4. Strain the coconut coir Sift or strain the coconut coir that has been blended to make it even smoother. When finished, put it in a used container or jar. The rest of the sieve or coir that is still rough can be mashed again with a blender or made MOL coconut coir. This coconut coir contains a lot of element K, namely potassium which can help for the fertilization process. Cocopeat can be used for seeding several types of vegetable and fruit plants.
  5. Mix the finely ground coconut coir with MOL. The finely chopped coconut or cocopeat must be soaked in MOL mixed water for 1 day. The mole used is a mixture of 1 liter of water added to 50 cc of rabbit urine and 100 cc of rice washing water.
  6. Strain again After 24 hours, strain the coconut husk or cocopeat to reduce the water immersion, it doesn’t need to be too tight because this coconut husk is used as a seedling medium. You can use drained coconut or cocopeat for planting and seeding media.
